ANNUAL CROSS-COUNTRY RACE

On a mild, sunny day, in total contrast to the rain, cold, and misery of last year, the annual Inter-House cross-country race was held Tuesday last. The good weather and excellent running conditions obviously helped the spirit of the occasion, and there were many fine individual performances. As old Brentonians will remember, the course has undergone a number of changes over the years as a result of development in the area to the west of "B" field. This year, too, saw a new pathway incorporating gravel roads, forest tracts, and the usual steep hills, but starting and finishing, as usual, on the school playing field on Deloume Road. The results of the race are given below.

FABRICATIONS 2

The results of the second Fabrications contest were announced last week. Each contest, open to all students in the school, seeks to promote student creative writing in various forms. The topic this time were for both poetry and prose was "wanderings".  Two of the winning poems are shown below.

Wanderings

As I wander down the sand
Rolling waves illumine the shoreline
And the moon floats in the reflected sea
Of the sky.
The tiny stars swim like half contented fish
Through the black mire above my head.
Beside me, the true ocean seems to glow,
Seems to pull all the light from the sky,
Leaving it in a pristine blackness, unmarred
Save by tiny dots of light.

Upon my right, brushing against my arm
The moist cliff shimmers in sea spray.
Time has hewn away at the rock
Leaving random, uneven edges.
Worn by the challenge of the sea the rock
Is no longer sharp but round,
And dull. It seems
To fade into the softness
Of the cold sand beneath
My sea soaked toes.

Anna Smith (Grade 10)

Wanderings

In my wanderings, I have seen all that is and all that is not
I have seen the young grow old and the old grow feeble and the feeble slip away

I have felt the burn of acceptance and the comfort of contempt
I have felt the lash of tongue and the pelt of stones
I have felt the faith of the lonely and the loss of the sacred.

In my wanderings, I have seen the nothing that is everything in the everywhere
I have seen monarchs on parade keeping prophets on payroll

In the cold and dark the things will play
In the warmth of the noonday sun they shudder
In the open of fields they will rejoice and carry the tune
In the wild the things will dance the dance of a thousand evenings
In the city they shall crumble, for nothing can live without.

In my wanderings, I have seen the machine propagate and spread cancerous
I have seen many succumb to be splendorous

To think as one would, is to be free
To think as one should, is to wear shackles
To think as one needs, is to stop living
To think as one who has never thought before, is to be born anew.

In my wanderings, I have seen tin roof angels sing the song of those long forgotten
I have seen Mohammed in rags, screaming to the false messiah

One unshaped block can move the world
One thought can create an Eden
One idea can kill millions
One life is worth ten cents of gas on the American market.

VISITING SPEAKERS
Robert Bateman

Speaking to all grades in the school in a special assembly on Saturday morning was well known artist and conservationist Robert Bateman

Based on the theme "Small is Beautiful", Mr. Bateman sought to stimulate students to be aware of their environmental responsibility, encouraging them to become active, on a personal basis, whenever possible. Each of the many slides of Mr. Bateman's paintings was associated with an anecdote or lesson to support his theme. The many questions that followed the presentation proved to be as equally interesting and, judging from the warm applause by the whole audience, the discussion was much appreciated by all.

Brian Kerr

Speaking to the Social Studies 11 class was local Liberal candidate Brian Kerr. Mr. Kerr explained the nomination process and electoral procedures, then participated in the Model Parliament which has been a feature of the course over the last week.

Mr. Kerr was rather magnanimous in claiming that he had learned a lot from the conduct of the students and the parliamentary process in general.

GRADE 8 DRAMA CLASS

In the options block of the grade 8 timetable, students take a combination of Information Technology and drama. The drama class, taught by Ms. Kairn Ritchie, experiences a comprehensive program designed to build confidence, as well as skills, in the students. The first unit covered is designed to build trust in fellow classmates, the second unit covers movement (mine and movement to music), and the third unit focuses on voice and experimenting with sounds in relation to body movement.

The unit on voice finished this week with the class performing their version of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss as vehicle to demonstrate the skills acquired. Parents of local day students were invited to watch the performance.

ICE HOCKEY

The second annual Ross Cup High School Hockey Tournament took place last weekend at the Kerry Park Recreation Complex in Mill Bay. The tournament was attended by 12 teams from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, and the Okanagan. Eight teams competed in the Senior Division and Four in the Junior Division.

The tournament was spread over three days and the 24 games produced some excellent hockey, with the champions proving to be the class of the tournament. The final standings for the two divisions were as follows:

Senior Division

1. Point Grey Secondary, Vancouver
2. Thomas Haney Secondary, Maple Ridge
3. Delphi Academy, Langley

Junior Division

1. Summerland Secondary, Summerland
2. Brentwood College School, Mill Bay
3. St. Georges School, Vancouver

The tournament is hosted and run by the students and staff of Brentwood College. Everyone involved showed outstanding spirit and co-operation, with dedicated and positive students looking after the scoring, timing, announcing, hosting, and even cleaning the dressing rooms. All of the teams commented on the positive and professional attitude of our students.

The Brentwood teams both played very well. Although the seniors did not progress to the medal round, they demonstrated a very positive attitude that would just not allow them to quit in any game. The highlight of the tournament for the seniors was a very strong comeback against the silver medal team that fell just a little short. Being down 3-1 the team rallied to tie the score early in the second period and continued to press hard but unfortunately lost by a narrow margin of 5-6.

The Junior division was more evenly balanced, but the class team was from Summerland, who went undefeated.
The BCS Juniors played with heart and determination in all games and, in front of over 175 loud and supportive BCS fans, defeated St. Georges by a score of 4-2, a result which allowed them to progress to the Gold Medal game.

In acknowledging thanks to all who helped with the tournament, we would surely miss many by listing names, so, instead,  here are a few statistics:

Days Played 3, Games Played 24, Teams Involved 12, Players 221, Coaches 24, Sponsors 9, Timers 5, Scorers 5, Announcers 5, Dressing Room Attendants 6, Hosts / Hostesses 6, Medical Staff 4, Kitchen Staff 5, Programs Produced 300, Program Production Team 5, Advertising Staff 3, Switchboard Staff 3, Transportation Staff 5, Laundry Staff 4, Faculty Coverage 6, Accounting Staff 2, Duplicating Room 1, BCS Fan Support 175+

Thanks to you all for making it happen.

Following a very exciting tournament, it was back to league play for the Juniors as they completed their first ever undefeated season with two wins this past week. The Juniors defeated Frances Kelsey by a score of 7-3 and, later in the week, defeated Shawnigan Lake School by a score of 7-1. The team showed great enthusiasm and team work in both games, and in our last game against Shawnigan, Marcus Woernle and Tyler VanKeKen each scored twice.

Staff Student Game

The Senior team last week took on the staff in the annual grudge match and, for the first time ever, the staff was defeated by a score too lopsided to mention. It will be the Juniors turn this week and the teachers are convinced that they can get back in the win column.

SQUASH

Squash at Brentwood has always been a popular sport, no doubt due to the excellent facilities of three international-size squash courts. Our squash teams in the past have always enjoyed considerable success, and were winners of the ISA squash tournament for four consecutive years in the period 1993-1996.
It would seem that the current squash group are ready to create another dynasty as both the junior and senior teams won their respective ISA tournaments over the weekend.

BASKETBALL

It was with great zeal these girls undertook the learning of a new sport, as only three had played the game before.

With Mr. Van Vliet and Marlee Hann to guide them, the team began a brief process of metamorphosis.  Dribble, pass, shoot, seemed easy enough, though the real objective was somewhat disguised.  "To have fun" seems a common enough goal, yet an elusive one if you feel embarrassed, defeated, or confused.  The team overcame all of these obstacles to hurdle themselves into the mid-Island tournament, and soon found themselves in the final against a very talented Gulf Islands team. Undaunted, they played like warrior-poets, and won the admiration of the crowd and -- most of all -- their coach.

Every member of the team should be very proud and know that their futures, no matter at what endeavour, are extremely bright.
