The structure of the prefect group this year
reflects a number of changes. All of the officers listed above form the Student
Executive, a group which meets with the school administration on a weekly basis
to discuss routines and school events. This year, there are no school prefects. Instead, the grade 12 students from each house are responsible for duties and management of the school on a one-week basis. For the first week, Ellis house were responsible for all supervision of the dining room, arrangement of the auditorium, etc., and each house will follow in rotation for the remainder of the term. Under this system duties are shared more evenly, and students will only find themselves responsible for a particular duty only once or twice per term. |

| NEW FACES ON CAMPUS | |||
| Gregor Klenz was born on July 18, 1970 in Berlin, Germany. His area of
expertise is also his passion: languages. He teaches French, and speaks German and Spanish fluently. He did his
Bachelor of Arts degree with High Honours at the University of Saskatchewan and
his Education Certificate at the University of Victoria. Gregor enjoys the outdoor activities of camping, hiking, fishing, and canoeing. |

Sarah Beeston grew up on the island,
but travelled far and wide to earn a B.A. (Hons) at Queens, a M.Lit at St
Andrews, Scotland, and a PDPP at UVic.
She teaches Spanish, Latin American Studies, and International Relations.
Sarah, like Gregor, enjoys traveling, languages, camping, hiking, and mountaineering. Her main hope for the coming year is to make it through |

| In his spare time he loves to listen to music, read, and cook. He looks forward to his first year of full-time teaching and getting to know all the students at Brentwood through his work with the Students Activities Committee. | alive, but she
definitely has plans to foster student enthusiasm for the outdoors and
lead
more student expeditions. |

On Sunday, Gregor and Sarah took a group of grade eight students on field trip to Horn Lake, near Qualicum on Vancouver Island. The group visited the site of a salmon enhancement project, then explored the limestone caves nearby. Unfortunately some of the grade eight students were not old enough to be allowed into the inner caverns (accessed by crawling down a narrow passage!), but were nevertheless impressed by the cave structure. The picture at the right shows the interior of the cave with all lights extinguished. |

Andy
Rodford was born in St. John, New Brunswick. He grew up in
Montreal and has spent the last fifteen years in Ontario, prior to coming
to Brentwood. Andy has degrees in biology, geography, education and
for six years was the Director of a summer camp for children and outdoor
centre in Ontario, before joining Albert College, as the Director of
Advancement and Admissions. Andy is a sports enthusiast, with a
passion for rowing, participating in coaching at several competitive
levels. Andy states that he is thrilled about taking on the role of Director of
Admissions and working with his wife Elizabeth in the admissions office.
Liz Rodford is also from Ontario, and has many computer and technical skills that will be invaluable in her role as Admissions Assistant. Her main interests are in field hockey, skiing, hiking, and travelling, although her self-confessed active pursuit of "cranial cohesion" should keep everyone in line. |

OLYMPIC ATHLETES
With the games well under way in Sydney, it would be appropriate to honour Old Brentonians who have participated in the Olympics in past years. The list, considering the relatively small size of the school, is impressive. All those mentioned competed in rowing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Special praise is due to Darren Barber and Blair Horn (Gold), and Ned Pratt and Bruce Ford (Bronze) who returned from the games with medals. |
Above: two early morning rowers caught on the water near the school at sunrise. Who knows, there might be another type of gold in their future. |

NEW SCHOOL UNIFORMS The Brentwood College School Dress Code has taken on a new look for the 2000 school year. The fabrics and styles have been updated to create a more modern look that is comfortable to wear, looks good, and — in our opinion — is value for money. The biggest difference from the old uniform for both boys and the girls is a black blazer instead of the previous navy blue. The remainder of the uniform stays primarily the same, although girls no longer wear ties with their ensemble. The remaining days of the week now offer some choices within a set group of clothing. There are black pants or a black skirt to match the blazer of the uniform, there are khaki shorts, a smart-looking black golf shirt with red and white trim as well as a variety of tops. The new items are manufactured by A-Wear clothing, a Vancouver based company owned in part by Patrizia Leone, an Old Brentonian. The process of change has not been without its glitches and we are appreciative of the patience shown by current students and parents. We are, of course, at the mercy of the fashion world and its manufacturers. The first shipment of blazers and pants has arrived at the school, providing 25% of the school with their items. Another shipment will arrive at the beginning of October, with the final delivery scheduled for the beginning of December, a little later than originally anticipated. We are hoping that all items will be here and ready for the new dress code to be in place by the end of the term. Peripheral items such as golf shirts, shorts and short sleeve shirts are arriving slowly, and are being disbursed as they come to us. We are all excited by the new developments and in the new look around the school! Shrawan Khanna Note: photographs of the new uniform will be posted when deliveries are complete. |

PHOTOGRAPHY
Congratulations go to grade 11 student Erica Zacharias, the winner of the prestigious Saltspring Island Photography Competition. Erica, whose home is on the Island, won this same competition last year in the junior category, but this year did even better by winning the open classification. Given the artistic talent resident on Saltspring Island, Erica's achievement deserves considerable praise. |

NEWS BITES
Debating Club. The club is now in operation, and is actively seeking participants for competitive debates held throughout the year. The club meets once a week during the lunch hour, attracting new members by the provision of an extra-special sandwich lunch! Sports Captains. Congratulations go to Tara Medina (field hockey) and Spencer Reid (soccer) who were appointed captains of their respective clubs at the school assembly last Tuesday. Theatre Tour. Edna Widenmaer and Keith Digby have chaperoned a cultural tour of the United Kingdom during the Spring Break many times over the last decade. This tour involves visits to museums, places of historical interest, as well as taking in at least three shows in London's West End. Students with any interest in the 2001 tour should contact the organizers for more information. |

Field Hockey. The Brentwood Girls 1st XI competed in the invitational UBC
tournament on the 16th September. The team played in seven games over the
weekend, with results as follows:
1. Crofton House ~ won 4-0 |
|
|
* Penticton, the eventual tournament winners and rated possibly the number one
team in the Province, have just returned from a tour, which showed in their
level of play. Nevertheless, the Brentwood team were very encouraged by their
performance and their fourth place finish, and are rapidly gaining confidence in
their ability to do well this season.
Since the tournament, the 1st XI have played three more games -- winning 6-0 against Shawnigan Lake School, losing 0-6 to Cowichan High School, and winning 1-0 against Alberni High School. The Junior team's only match this week was a 2-2 tie with Cowichan High School. The Grade 8 team played two matches this week, winning 1-0 against Shawnigan Lake School and finishing with a score of 1-2 against Mount Provost School. |
|
Soccer. The boys 1st XI competed in the ISA tournament in Vancouver. The first game, against Shawnigan Lake School was an excellent opening to the season, ending with a 4-1 win. The second match, against SMU also ended in a win (by 2-1). In the final, Brentwood lost a close game to St Georges, thus finishing the tournament in second place. All ISA competitions this year will feature medals for students or teams placing first, second, or third. The silver medals for the team were awarded at the Tuesday assembly by coach J. J. Atterbury. The 2nd XI enjoyed their game against Shawnigan Lake School, finishing with a 9-1 win. Volleyball. The previous weekend, the girls Junior A volleyball team played in the Frances Kelsey tournament. The girls won eight of their 12 games in the round-robin including a win over Lake Cowichan (the eventual tournament winners). After a close loss to Frances Kelsey's first team in the semifinal, Brentwood finished the tournament in third place. Rugby. The Mighty Mice (the grade 8 team) played their very first rugby match, enjoying the experience immensely by defeating George Bonner School 36-0. |

Golf: Congratulations go to Mark Aven who
competed in, and won, the Western Canadian Junior Tour Golf Championship, held
at the Whistler Golf Club on the 16/17th September. The best eight golfers aged
18 and under from Alberta and B.C. competed.
Mark was invited to participate in the event based on his best four tournament results this season. These were obviously very good indeed, and included a win in a tournament the week before. Mark's scores for the two rounds on the par 72 course were 73 and 74 -- a poor result (he claims!) which was entirely due to the adverse weather conditions. (Mark will not be allowed to compete in the Brentwood staff vs.students golf match next Spring). |
