Week 29: Tuesday 12th June, 2001               (Next Edition: Tuesday 19th June)

A TRIBUTE TO JLQ

On Saturday 9th June, past and present generations of Whittall House together with former lightweight rowers, joined together in a celebration to honour John Queen for his 32 years of service at Brentwood College School. For thirty of those years, John Queen was the Housemaster in Whittall House.

The day started out early for the present members of the House, as they prepared for Mr. Queen's final formal Saturday morning inspection. To help him with this task, 10 former House Captains attended to turn the house upside down, many of whom had had not stepped foot in Whittall House since the day they graduated. They were:

Jeff Allester 1972
Neil Reid 1974
Scott McKillop 1978
Scott Matheson 1979
Warren Brazier 1988
Dirk Trojan (1991)
Sean McElgunn 1994
Sam Boyte 1993
Billy Boyte 1995
Mike Lewis 2000
Justin Woodward 2001

In the afternoon, a reception was held in the staff room to welcome back the rest of the crowd. The energy in the room was electric as Old Brentonians met old friends and teachers. At 3:00pm four "not so lightweight" eights took to the water for a 500 m race, for which an lengthy warm-up was needed! The entire National Champion crew of 1977 started strongly and took a lead that they would never relinquish. The 90’s boat was second, followed by the 80’s boat and then the 70’s boat.

At 6:30 pm, 100 people met at Arbutus Ridge Golf and Country Club to dine and celebrate Mr. Queen's accomplishments. After dinner, the Master of Ceremonies, Scott Matheson (1979), introduced the Head table (although JLQ was insistent that all tables were head tables!): John  Queen, his brother and sister-in-law Anthony and Valerie Queen, Kip Woodward, Dennis and Linda McElgunn, Marius and Andrea Felix, and Andrea and Gerry Pennells.

John spoke eloquently of his 32 years at Brentwood. His humble words touched everyone and I imagine that there was not a dry eye in the place. I was given the task of making the toast on behalf of the Old Brentonians to John Queen, a task that proved difficult in terms of controlling my emotions.

Dirk Trojan (1991) and Brodie Cupples (1974) then made the first of a series of presentations, which was a monetary donation to the school’s physics department (the Old Brentonians have asked to buy a piece of equipment in honour of John Queen).

The second presentation was made by Blair Horn (1979), Graham Young (1973), Doug Ewing (1983) and Chad Danard (1997), awarding John his school colours for rowing as well as a gold medal for his 25 years service to the Rowing Club.

After a brief intermission, Jonathan Rhodes (2001) made a six minute power point presentation called "30 Years of Whittall House". This was a comprehensive survey of all that JLQ has done for the School, from Gilbert and Sullivan productions to the crews he coached, to the good (and bad!) times of Whittall House.

The final presentation was made by Jeff Allester (1972), Justin Woodward (2001), and artist Mark Jackson. The inaugural Whittall House Senior Service Award will be presented each year to a senior member of the House for service to the House and to the School. The trophy is a carving of an eagle and will sit in the trophy case in Whittall House. The recipient of the 2001 award went to John Queen.

Andrea Pennells had the final words of the night, thanking John Queen for all that he has done for Brentwood College. It was a fitting way to end a perfect night.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andrea for the full support of the school in the hosting of this event. I would also like to thank Joan May in assisting me with the organisation -- without her support and resources, this event would never have happened. Finally, I would like to thank all the Old Brentonians who made the effort to return to the school to honour John Queen.

SURVIVORS

Many TV shows of late have followed the "survivor" theme. All those students present at the ninth annual Lifers Dinner last Wednesday evening at the Quamichan Inn could have given the scriptwriters of these shows a multitude of ideas, drawing upon their experiences of the last five years. The dinner is held each year to celebrate the graduation of those students who first entered the school in grade 8, and who have thus enjoyed their school career entirely at Brentwood College. A very pleasant evening, full of reminiscences of years ago, concluded with a tribute, and small gifts, to each of the students from their Houseparent.

THE BRENTWOOD BANDSTAND

On Friday evening, music aficionados gathered in the auditorium for the Brentwood Bandstand -- featuring numbers by groups and solo performers. Director Gordon Clements was joined onstage by staff members Cheryl Wohl (trumpet) and Kairn Ritchie (vocals) to complement the more than 40 musicians who took part.

Judging from the applause and general appreciation, an upbeat time was had by all.

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY

Wednesday of last week was photo day. All groups in the school: houses. clubs, councils, and organizations posed for their formal pictures.

These official mementos of the school year (of somewhat better quality than the examples shown here!) will be available from the school bursary later this week.

GRADE 9 DRAMA PRODUCTION

On Wednesday of last week, the ninth grade drama class put on a production entitled "Under Pressure", which was all about... yes, you guessed it, being under pressure!
It covered everything from racism to self-image and the stereotypical "staying in line" image. The actors showed no fear talking about such controversial subject material as bullying, drugs, and homophobia; revealing later, in a question and answer session after the show, that most of the lines were improvised, except for key phrases to help them out with important points.

All in all, the play was beautifully executed, thanks to the actors, the student helpers, and most importantly, Ms. Ritchie who organized it all. Felicitations, grade 9 drama class!

VISIT TO UVIC LABS

The Advanced Placement Biology course involves a series of 12 lab experiments, 10 of which are carried out in the Brentwood labs. The remaining two make use of specialized -- and very expensive -- equipment which is generally unavailable in high schools. Thanks to the University of Victoria's program allowing outside schools to make use of their facilities, the two Brentwood Biology 11 classes were therefore able to conduct their molecular biology labs, last week, at individual workstations in the University laboratories. The two labs were based on DNA fingerprinting (the same technique used in criminal trials) and bacterial transformation.

Another benefit of the trip is the experience that students gain working in University facilities and observing a campus in operation.

CHEM 13 NEWS EXAMINATION RESULTS

The Chem 13 News is a competitive examination sponsored by the University of Waterloo. The best Chemistry 12 students from this school are invited to compete, but sometimes find the competition from grade 13 students in Ontario challenging.

Nevertheless, the Brentwood results this year were excellent:

1. Chris Kloosterman  (ranked 64th in Canada with 82%)
2. Jonathan Rhodes  (ranked 67th in Canada with 81.75%)
3. David Reichert

Chris and Jonathan were in the top 2% of entrants, and received offers of Research Assistantships (should they decide to attend Waterloo), a certificate, and  a T-shirt! David was ranked in the top 10% of entrants.

Jonathan also competed in the Chemical Institute of Canada exam and received a certificate which recognised his excellent performance.

TRACK AND FIELD DAY

The annual inter-house track and field competition was held last week, with preliminary rounds staged on the Tuesday and the main meet on Thursday. The weather was glorious, a factor which always contributes to high spirits, keen competition, and many fine individual performances. The track meet is one of a series of inter-house competitions held throughout the year. Students are divided into four competitive houses, the team colors of which (Ellis: green, Privett: blue, Rogers: orange, and Whittall: red) are apparent in the accompanying photos. The total points standing for the year is traditionally announced on Awards Day (23rd June).

Final standings in the track meet are not yet finalised.

GRAD PLANS

Congratulations to

Justin Woodward who has been awarded a scholarship of $8,500 from the Faculty of Science at Carleton University,
Peter Hackett (awarded $2,000 to study Hotel & Restaurant Administration at Guelph),
Laura Code (awarded $9,000 to study Animal Science at Guelph).

PRODUCTION TAPES

A feature of all Brentwood major productions in the auditorium is the presence of Mr. Lance Bean, who, complete with video camera, ensures that there will always be a permanent record of the event for the archives.

At right, Djuna Field (Grade 9) watches a re-run of the 'Evening of Dance'.

Students appearing in the 'Evening of Dance', the 'Evening of Music', and 'The Merry Widow' have already purchased their souvenir tapes.

CANDY FLOSS

Inspired by Amelia Payne's desire to spend the summer holiday doing charity work in the Third World (for the full story, see This Week 27), grade 10 student Callianne Bachman spent Saturday afternoon on the school plaza selling candy floss to other students. All the proceeds raised ($340) through Callianne's selfless initiative  were then donated to Amelia to help with Amelia's expenses in traveling to Cameroon in July. Fortunately, Callianne is a candy floss expert (even possessing her own equipment!) in that manufacturing and selling candy floss is her regular summer job on Saltspring Island.
