CULINARY ARTS FOR ROWERS
Partly to stimulate team spirit, and partly as a bonding
exercise, the senior girls rowers, together with coaches Suzanne Walker and
Richard Curry, last week enjoyed supper at the home of Simon
Vermegen.
Simon, presently a member of the Brentwood maintenance crew, is a fully
qualified chef who, until his "retirement", was the executive chef
at the Vancouver Convention Center. Simon assisted the girls in preparing
supper (spaghetti sauce, with cream puffs for dessert), pointing out the
special steps that ensure an appealing and tasty final product. The evening
was enjoyed by all although, for athletes in training, maybe resulted in
body-building exercises of a different kind! |

| NEW FACES ON CAMPUS | |||
|
Kairn Ritchie is originally from
Ontario, but grew up in B.C. Her passions: French, process drama, and
theater, are -- obviously -- also her areas of expertise. Kairn has acted and directed
professionally in film, TV, and the theater.
This year, Karen will be teaching French, drama, and acting as Assistant Houseparent in Alexandra House. |

| The face of Tim Van Vleet will be instantly recognizable to many Old Brentonians. Tim graduated from Brentwood in 1991 then spent two years at the University of Alberta in pre-veterinary medicine. Tim recently graduated from UVic with a degree in education and will spend this year at Brentwood as a teaching intern, honing his skills and assisting with administrative duties. Tim is looking forward to a teacher exchange to Scotland in the near future. |

Seven
years ago when I graduated I would not have thought I’d be walking into
the Brentwood staff room without an invitation and helping myself to the
infamous cookie jar, jumping the line into the cafeteria without a second
thought, or greeting Mr. Prowse every morning as "Nick". I am,
however, back at Brentwood and I am seeing things from the "other
side"! Remember how hectic the schedule was being a student? Well,
teaching here is twice that! My life is very busy and challenging everyday
in my roles as geography teacher, rowing coach and "big sister"
to 50 girls in Mackenzie House.
I started school at UVic to study geography in the September following my graduation from Brentwood (1993). I graduated from UVic in 1997 and worked in the forestry industry for one year. I had always had the thought of a teaching career in the back of my mind so I applied to the one-year post degree teaching program at UVic. I was accepted and I completed my teaching practicum in June 2000. Prior to completing |
||
| the
program I was aware of a rumour that Steve Wynne was going to retire and
that there would possibly be a geography position available at Brentwood.
I immediately contacted Mr. Ross and Mrs. Pennells and well, here I am! It
was a bit of a shock to my high school friends to find out I was
returning, and for the students at the school to find out that I am an
ex-student. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been asked,
"Isn’t it weird to be back?" Well, the answer is, no! I have
walked into an amazing place to start my teaching career and I am excited
to be here. My goals for this year include doing well at what I have been
assigned, getting used to being on "the other side", and, most
of all, having fun.

| STUDENT
PHOTOGRAPHS
On Wednesday and Thursday of last week, all students in the school had their photographs taken. Two cameras were used simultaneously during these sessions -- a 35 mm Nikon and a digital Sony. The photos recorded by the first camera will be used for student ID cards and portrait packages as requested by parents, whereas the images captured by the second camera will be used for internal school records. All of the examples on this page were taken by the digital camera and thus reflect a slightly different angle from those as perceived by the Nikon. A sample of what the parents see: |

SPORTS IN THE SUN
Thanks to the remarkably fine weather of late, sports sessions on the school fields have been blessed with sunny and warm conditions. Each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoon the various venues become a hive of activity with multiple games of soccer, rugby, field hockey, and tennis in action as can be seen from the accompanying shots. MILLIONAIRE ASPIRATIONS
On Saturday evening the Grad Council provided their own version of "Who wants to be a millionaire?" The small print at the bottom of the advertising flyers pasted around the school during the previous week made it quite clear that the decimal point in the winning prize might have slipped somewhat to the left, but, nevertheless, over 100 students signed up to participate in the show. |

work by Chris Kloosterman who created a computer-based simulation of
the program (which was then projected onto a large screen -- see
