| MICHELLE
KOOP
Speaking
to the School last Saturday was Michelle Koop, a CBC radio announcer,
gifted pianist, and (almost incidentally) an Olympic athlete. Such
multi-talented persons are so rare that her sparkly personality and stage
presence seemed like perks when added to what was already an inspiring
visit. Most of us filed into the auditorium not knowing what to expect,
but Michelle's personal struggles stemmed from her height, which, at 5' 6", is not as tall as most volleyball players in the position of setter -- and, though the challenges faced by Brentwood students do not necessarily involve height or even volleyball, Michelle's experiences were identified with by everybody in the auditorium. The audience was also treated to a rendering of a Mozart piece and one of Michelle's own compositions, and the event was enjoyed by all attending. Claire Theaker-Brown (Grade 12) |

| Reservation for 105, please? | Saturday evening was a date on the calendar that had been eagerly anticipated for some time. Once the day arrived, virtually the entire Grad class of 2002 were ready to go. Two buses transported the masses over the Malahat and to the Macaroni Grill in downtown Victoria for an incredible Grad class dinner. With fabulous service and food provided by the restaurant (including the availability of crayons for those who felt the need to draw on the paper tablecloths), the dinner ran smoothly and with great efficiency. Special thanks go to Vanessa Morcom and the rest of the Grad Council for their hard work in organizing this event and to the bus drivers, Cal McFarlane and John Yeates for their contribution to a very enjoyable getaway for the Grad class and a wonderful Saturday night! |

| AS

Wednesday of this week was
dress-up day. For a small fee, students and staff paid for the privilege
of forgoing the usual uniform and, instead, imitating others. Thus staff
members dressed as students, and students imitated staff members. Some of
the results were hilarious, as can be seen from the photos. Right: Linsey

WESTERN
CANADA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Athleticism and great volleyball are two key components of any sports tournament. However, the Western Canadian Independent School’s Volleyball Championships have celebrated much more since 1972 when the tournament was founded by Sandy Heard, Headmaster of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir and Brad Kilb, the school’s volleyball coach. Hosted this year by Brentwood College School, the Championships promote sportsmanship and new Canadian cultural experiences for athletes. The tradition of the Spartan Cup continues with the addition this year of the "Most Valuable Player" award, given to one member of each team. Thus, this year, ten such MVP’s were chosen from teams from all four western provinces. Tricia Persson was named MVP for Brentwood. |
|
|
|
| The tournament began with the opening ceremony, with remarks by speakers Mrs. Andrea Pennells and Mr. Clayton Johnston. At this event, the audience of mainly Brentwood students met all ten teams and heard Alysha Dedhar sing a beautiful "O Canada". Later she joined the jazz choir, accompanied by John Williams, to sing "Satin Doll" while decked out in red and black in support of the school. Vic Lindal, accomplished coach and referee at our tournament, then inspired the athletes and the audience with the unlikely success story of one of his own volleyball players. His message was: "whatever your skills are, get better at them." This theme was one echoed the next morning in a school assembly and at the banquet dinner Saturday evening when students and teachers were captivated by the story of Michelle Sawatzky Koop. |
|
| For
the whole weekend, Brentwood witnessed great teamwork on the volleyball
court and also saw some great
teamwork off the court from parents, staff and students alike. Many thanks
go to the day student parents who helped billet the athletes, especially
coordinator Jayne Lin. The tournament was also aided greatly by the
maintenance staff and laundry staff (thanks especially to Chris Nelson for
the banners decorating the gym walls). The banquet on Saturday night, when
MVP’s were named and the athletes celebrated with cheers from each team,
would not have been possible without the Cafeteria Staff, Elizabeth
Rodford and Jennie in the administration, and Andy Rodford, our Master of
Ceremonies.
Thanks goes to Lynn James, Tony Medina, Shawnigan Lake School and Chris Stapff. Chris Stapff along with Clyde Ogilvie, and old Brentonians Jodie Norris and Veronika Voracek made up the allstar committee. Another old Brentonian, Louise Pickles, helped the volunteer score and lines keepers as well as troubleshooting for the tournament website. Thanks go to all the student volunteers, in particular Jessi Haines, Jessica Lau. Katie Lin with the help of Darryl Pavitt helped create this year, for the first time, a digital slide show for the banquet. Special thank-you’s are deserved by guest speakers Vic Lindal and Michelle Sawatzky Koop and of course, to Mr. Khanna for organizing the tournament this year for his volleyball team. Brentwood College School’s message last weekend was a clear one. When volunteerism, sportsmanship and teamwork combine together, experiences and events such as the very successful Western Canadian Independent Schools’ Volleyball Championships are possible. ROWING: ELK LAKE REGATTA
Last weekend 50 members of the Rowing Club travelled to Victoria, Elk Lake to compete at their first regatta of the year. The weather was typical of Elk Lake with great racing conditions on Saturday and wind and rain on Sunday. The crews managed to shine in all of the conditions, however, and had excellent results. The coaches and athletes are very excited about the rest of the year if these results are an indication of the talent and ability of the members of the boathouse. The results are shown at right. |

|
The next regatta for the rowing
club will be the weekend of November 17 &18, 2001 at Elk Lake in
Victoria.

FIELD HOCKEY VISIT Visiting the school this week was a field hockey team from King William College, Douglas, Isle of Man, in the United Kingdom. The girls, accompanied by coaches Jane Corlett and Bernie Lace are on a tour of Western Canada, playing matches against school teams from Vancouver and Vancouver Island. The Bentwood team were perfect hosts in providing UK-style weather for the match -- a combination of sun, showers, and high winds -- but were not as polite in the competitive sense in winning the game 5-0. After a partly compensating excellent dinner which afforded some enjoyable socializing between the teams, the visitors then traveled down the road for the next match against Shawnigan Lake School. |

| GUEST LECTURER
As technology changes the world, the curriculum of most school subjects also changes. Senior high mathematics courses, in particular, have undergone radical revisions over the last 10 years, becoming more and more dependent on the use of calculators. The new Principles of Mathematics 12 course (first implemented this year) requires that students have thorough operating skills with graphics calculators. Visiting the school last week was Mr. Bob Hart, a representative of Texas Instruments, who gave a presentation to all students in the Math 10, Math 11, and Math 12 classes on the capabilities of graphics calculators with relevance to the particular course content. |

SPORTS RESULTS 2nd XI SOCCER The Barswood Trophy is a creation of 2nd XI coach and general soccer fanatic Paul Collis. Each season, the John Barsby School 1st XI and the Brentwood College 2nd XI play a home-and-away series to compete for this highly esteemed prize, an artistic creation in B.C. wood products. After losing the trophy last year, the 2nd XI regained their pride after a 5-2 and 3-3 total points victory last week. |

SECOND ELEVEN (TEN!) FIELD HOCKEY TEAM
The Second XI
Field Hockey team has had a season of success thus far. Originally
comprised of a mix of some disappointed girls who were not selected for
the first team this year, as well as some girls not feeling too confident
in their hockey-playing abilities, the team has started to solidify into a
group of hard-working and enthusiastic individuals -- Claire Theaker-Brown (Grade 12) |
