THIS WEEK

Week 19: Tuesday 6th April, 1999 (the next edition of This Week will appear 13th April)

Annual Charity Work Day
Once each year the students of the school volunteer their services to the community.
For a modest fee, local residents hire students to perform all sorts of household tasks and garden chores. Through this experience, Brentwood students have developed expertise in a wide variety of tasks ranging from painting to picking rocks, chopping wood, or cleaning out stables. Naturally, all students like to brag about the physical demands or the length of time for their particular assignment, but everyone has a genuine feeling of contribution to a good cause.
In 1998 the students raised a total of $11,000, all of which went to the following local charities:
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Cowichan Valley
Camp Goodtimes C.C.S.
Canadian Cancer Society
Canadian Diabetes Association
CARE CANADA
B.C. and Yukon Heart and Stroke Fund
BC Lupus Society
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Cowichan and District Branch)
Cowichan Valley Therapeutic Riding Association
Cowichan Valley United Way Campaign
Vancouver Island Head Injury Society
B.C. Lions Society for Children With Disabilities (Camp Shawnigan)

(an official tax receipt is issued by the charity for those who request it).

This year's Charity Work Day will be held on Saturday 10th April
Student helpers will be available between 9 am and 4 pm

If you would like to hire a helper, please choose one of the following:

Brentwood Grads
Elisette Sroka and Chrissy Lavdovsky report that they are alive and well and surviving the rigours of a New Jersey winter. Both are attending Princeton University, Eli -- in her final year -- is majoring in English, and Chrissy is in a pre-med programme.
Eli (grad of 95) is the cox of the Princeton Women's Varsity 8 crew, while Chrissy is a member of the same crew -- an incredible achievement for a student in her first year.

Spring Break Tours (1)
Eight girls, their coach, Mr. Shrawan Khanna, and chaperone Ms. Beverly Lemay spent the Spring Break holiday on a 14 day volleyball tour of Japan. The combination of sports, sightseeing, and a unique cultural experience was apparently the perfect way to pass the time.
A brief description of the tour shows:

Tochigi The team stayed at the hotel owned by Mr. Mrs. Hoshi, parents of Minoru Hoshi (Grade 12), and first sampled the delights of Japanese hot tubs.
Morioka The team stayed in billets, played against two strong teams (Morioka High School and Morioka College), losing both matches.
Kyoto Winning games against Kyoto and Meitoku school teams.
Tokyo Stayed at the Canadian Embassy, played, and won, matches against Keiyo High School, Tamagawa School, Honjo School, and the Tamagawa University boys team.
In Tokyo and Kyoto the team was joined by Stephanie Sloan (Grade 11) traveling from her home in Tokyo.
After all the matches were over, the party visited Disneyland for a cultural experience of a different kind.

Above is a shot of the girls taking part in the coach's unique drill for practising blocking at the net.

second row: Tricia Persson and Melanie Jones;
third row: Nadine Probst and Monica Cyba (from Frances Kelsey School);
back row: Jacquie Connor and Falyn MacMillan.

(Tetsuro has since learned how to walk without assistance)

Spring Break Tours (2)
Also on tour were 14 boys and 16 girls from the Rowing Club, accompanied by coaches Susanne Walker, Nicole Peters, and Tony Carr. The party were hosted by the Los Gatos Rowing Club of San Jose, California,  using the 10 day trip for training and preparation for the 1999 season.
Besides the training and competition events with the Los Gatos crews, time was found for sight-seeing trips to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Carmel, and Monterey.

Spring Break Tours (3)
This Spring Break, 26 students, from grade 8 through grade 12, joined Mrs. Widenmaier, Mr. Digby and Mrs. Cheung (Monique's mother) on the week-long London Theatre Tour.  Our days were spent on a guided city tour where we saw such sights as London Bridge, St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey; performing on stage at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (with Dan Bargh and Zach Chan's humorous acting); viewing the acclaimed Monet Exhibit at the Royal Academy of Arts; exploring Portobello Road; as well as various other sight-seeing jaunts.
We escaped the big city for one day, heading to Leeds Castle, complete with a garden maze, aviary, and beautiful grotto, in Kent. After Leeds Castle, we went to Canterbury Cathedral, where we were lucky enough to have a full guided tour, allowing us to understand more of the history of the Cathedral and England in general.
Our nights were spent in London at various plays or musicals, as we each saw at least three shows, including one major

musical.  "Blood Brothers" proved to be a popular show, as everyone who saw it  recommended it to others.  Overall, the trip was an enormous success and a fun time was had by all.

Personal Achievement
Patrick Postrehovsky (Grade 11) entered the Maui Marathon. A total of 2200 athletes started the marathon and 1730 finished -- maybe due to the fact that the weather was, not surprisingly, quite warm. Patrick had to be up by 3 am to make the 5:30 am start, and finished 4th in the 12-19 years age group with a time of 3:59:18. Patrick was the youngest Canadian in the run, and intends to compete again next year.

Old Brentonian's Golf
The 3rd ANNUAL BRENTWOOD CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT will be held on Friday 28th May at the University Golf Club (I:00 pm shotgun start). All Old Brentonians are welcome to play -- superior skills definitely not necessary!

AHSME
The American High Schools Mathematics Examination is a competition paper written by the top mathematics students throughout North America. The examination is cross-grade, the same paper being written by students from grades 8-12. Thousands of schools participate.
Brentwood Results for 1999:
