Dinner
On
Thursday of last week, the United States citizens living on campus celebrated
the American Thanksgiving holiday. There were 34 in attendance, with Tim
and Rhonda Mitchell -- the Brentwood Sea-Rescue instructors -- from Salt
Lake City, Utah, acting as hosts. Special guest Andrea Pennells gave a
toast to the friendship between nations, and the Pledge of Allegiance was
led by Rhonda Mitchell. Tim Mitchell gave a toast to the United States
and to absent families, then proceeded to carve the ham and turkey. The
guests enjoyed a pleasant few hours before returning to their regular routine,
including a planning session for the decorations for next year.

Friday and Saturday the school hosted two performances of "A Celtic Christmas
Concert". Host/mc/compere for the evening was the irrepressible Will
Millar, well-known both locally and internationally in the music field.
Also on stage were 12 talented local musicians. The concert was in aid
of the Cowichan Valley Hospice Society which received over $3000 after
a full house on both nights. Brentwood students acted as hosts for the evening, directing guests to the auditorium and assisting with seating. Seen at the right are Brentwood student James Deck at his station on the lighting board and Tom Aylward-Nally taking a break from hosting duties. |

Friday December 4 starting at 7.30 pm, you are cordially invited to join
us in the Brentwood Auditorium for a special Christmas by Candlelight
evening of music, dance, and readers’ theatre. This event replaces our
Festival of Christmas Music and Readings held in the past on the afternoon
following the last Christmas exam.
Our Christmas by Candlelight programme includes Christmas music ranging from traditional to baroque to swing, the premiere of a dance choreographed by Ayako Tono to be performed in Japan in the Spring, and a readers’ theatre presentation of "The Gift of the Magi". After an hour or so, we will adjourn upstairs to the Dining Room for mince pies, shortbread, coffee and eggnog to celebrate the season. |
| This
year the Grade 9 elective classes have changed. Replacing the Computer
Resources 9 and Public Speaking 9 classes are Art History 9, Comparitive
Religion 9, Business Studies 9, Science and Technology 9
taught by Rob MacLean, Clayton Johnson, Mike Flynn,
Miles Allkins. Students select three of the four alternatives, taking
one class per term.
Seen at the left are Rob MacLean and visiting lecturer Ina Lee from the Vancouver Art Gallery setting up for an Art History class. |
| Each year the Auld Kirk Gallery in Shawnigan Lake hosts a seasonal exhibition of works of art. Associated with the exhibition is the "Picture a Poem" competition, where students are invited to write a poem or paragraph inspired by one of the works of art on display. The grade 8 class visited the gallery as a field trip with their teachers Edna Widenmaier and Cari Bell and then submitted their entries. The two winners in the competition were Brentwood students Robyn Burrows (pictured reading her entry at the right) and Jill Gregory. Their winning entries can be seen below. In the "honourable mention" category were Brentwood students Adam Schneider and Drew Young for paragraph entries, and Julia Martin and Karli Pickett for poem entries. | |

CATCHING THE BREEZE by Mischa German-van Eck. The
rosy-cheeked girl, with tousled auburn hair and a new, popsicle-blue windbreaker
on stood as still as a statue. Her dog, which was also her best friend,
stood panting heavily beside her. The pair was resting for a moment
on the deserted beach. They had been running and frolicking together
for what seemed like hours and hours, and both were freed of all energy.
The cheerless grey sky seemed to hover ominously low over their heads,
like a bulging bubble about to burst. The tide was coming in. Slowly,
one frothy blue wave gently rolled over each minute grain of sand, coming
closer and closer to touching the girl's sandaled toes. The girl's
nose was a cherry red because it was so cold. Her newly "salted"
hair clung to her chapped lips and clammy cheeks as it flew around her
head in the fresh ocean breeze. Unmistakable cries of seagulls, ever present
near the ocean, could be heard in the background, if you strained your
ears against the storm of the wind. Now that the girl had finished
ridding herself of nagging worries, she was ready to go. home. She
turned and softly urged her dog to follow her. The sky was getting
dark and the small girl knew it was time to leave the peaceful harmony
she had found on the lonely beach.
