Week 1: Tuesday 21st September
1999 (Next edition Tuesday 28th September)
Welcome to the Brentwood College School Web page for the 1999-2000
academic year.
Classes began on Monday 13th September with a record
enrolment of 427 students -- 335 boarders and 92 day students. Of these 138 are new students, mainly from western Canada and the United States,
but also from faraway places such as Chile, Mexico, Germany, Taiwan, and Saudi
Arabia.
The aim of this weekly page is to
allow parents, Old Brentonians, and friends of the school to keep in touch with
the events and people that are a feature of daily life at Brentwood. Prospective
students and interested parents are also welcome to browse the pages of this site
which give details about the school and admission procedures. Links to this data
(found on the home
page) will be activated
as the term develops.
ROGERS HOUSE OPENING |
|
| Forrest Rogers
attended Brentwood College for four years, graduating with the class of
1930. Following the devastating fire of 1947, he was one of a small group
of successful and influential Old Brentonians who overcame many challenges
to reestablish the school at its present location in 1961. As a loyal
supporter and benefactor, he joined the Board of Governors and served as
Chairman from 1962 to 1971, and as Honorary Governor, 1974 to 1987. The
school is indebted to Forrest and to his family for the immense
contribution that they have made to the success of the present school.
There were many visitors on hand for the official opening of the new
Rogers house on Saturday 11th September. The residence replaces the first
Rogers House opened in 1974. Designed by our resident architect, Mr. Mike
Rose, it accommodates 52 boys, two full houses for house staff, and two
additional apartments for residential staff. |

graduate of 1985) |
| After initial remarks by
the Headmaster, there were informative and impassioned speeches from Lynn
Eyton (Chairman of the Board), Michael Rose (Architect), Bruce
Tate and Clayton Johnston (Housemasters), and Matt Douma (Head
of Rogers House). The three generations of the Rogers family present then
officially opened the new house and invited all guests to view the
facilities. |

 |
| All new students to the school take part in an
orientation program the week before formal classes begin. This program is
to advise the students of the school routines, academic expectations, and
to assist in decisions regarding academic courses, fine art programmes,
and sports.
Not all of the week is a serious affair, and the Fun and Games
evening is an attempt to provide relief and to act as a vehicle for
meeting new classmates.
