MACBETH

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of last week the Acting 12 class presented their version of Macbeth.
The medieval vision of evil physically present in the world prompted Director Keith Digby to devise this contemporary version that presents the witches as a constant presence in the play -- prompting, challenging and urging characters towards adopting evil means to gain their ends. The result was intriguing and theatrically interesting, even to those who have seen Macbeth many times before. Each performance was then followed by a short discussion with the cast and director.

TEACHER TALENT

Those of us who remember Director Keith Digby's excellent productions from last year (The Insanity of Mary Girard and Waiting for the Parade) were not surprised by the quality of his latest creative masterpiece. Before joining the staff at Brentwood, Keith had an impressive professional career as actor, director, adjudicator, and stage playwriting competition jurist. A glance at the impressive list of credits below -- plays that he has directed outside of the school's drama programme over the past 25 years -- indicates a wealth of professional experience.

INTER-HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY

On a rather wet -- but not too cold -- day, the annual inter-house cross-country race was held on its usual course around the heights and trails to the north of 'B' Field. The rain of the previous few days ensured that the course was thoroughly soaked and provided challenging hazards of wide pools of water and slippery slopes to negotiate.

SQUASH

The provincial junior squash championships were held this past weekend from Friday through Sunday at Port Coquitlam. Five senior and four junior team representatives from Brentwood competed and produced the school's best results for a number of years.

Leading the team were
Jack Lee (winner of the Under 17B championship),
Bobby Pau (winner of the Under 15 novice championship),
Damian Kayra (winner of the Under 17 novice championship).

Other notable results were:
Kris Baker (second place), Isaac Chen, John Seymour, and Misha Dordevich (third place in their respective events.

STAFF PATRIOTISM

This photograph shows:

    (A) A St.Valentine's Day enthusiast.
    (B) Someone who dribbles soup down the front of his shirt
    (C) A new type of body fungus
    (D) A true Welsh patriot

If your answer was (D) then you obviously recognised Brentwood Computer Systems manager Dewi Griffiths in his (lone) efforts to promote St. David's Day.
Dewi passed the day singing "Men of Harlech" and offering to pronounce  Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
for the unenlightened.

ROWING

The Brentwood rowing club competed in the Elk Lake Sprints on Saturday and Sunday. This was an open club regatta with the national team in attendance.
The race distance was 1850m. Saturday was sunny and warm, with no wind; Sunday was cold, cloudy, with a strong tail wind.
