Week 2: Tuesday 28th September 1999
  (Next edition: Tuesday 5th October)

Situated on the west shore of Saanich Inlet, the school looks out to a magnificent eastward vista across to Pat Bay with the distant San Juan Islands and Mount Baker in the background. The daily weather is always in immediate focus and the morning skies around sunrise as viewed from the school dining room at breakfast time give frequent colourful displays. The weather since the beginning of term has been mainly sunny although "Red sky in morning..." might be the signal for change.

NEW STAFF

Sandra Wood

Margaret Flynn

Sandra is originally from Calgary, where she earned her B.Ed. degree. Since moving to B.C. she has had many years experience in teaching in Victoria, and joins Brentwood  to teach English. Sandra is the new Housemistress of Gwynneth House (the old Rogers House, now a residence for girls).  Margaret hails from Chomedy, Laval, Quebec. She has over 20 years teaching experience in four different provinces, and has specialist qualifications in French, Physical Education, and Special Education. Margaret's duties this year will be teaching French, acting as the Junior Girls Volleyball team coach, and assisting in the running of Mackenzie House.

Ron Neufeld is the name of a hopelessly ordinary character who only reluctantly takes 'about the teacher' notes seriously. He was born in Canada, the exact whereabouts are to this day a matter of speculation for the local police. As the eldest of four brothers, Ron delighted in tormenting the younger three with wild fantasies involving facts that existed only in his mind (How do you get gummy bears? Think about it and you'll never eat another.). Quickly realising that such stories would fare much better with the authority of science, Ron undertook a Biochemistry and Chemistry degree at the University of Victoria. While there he also undertook secret work in the Chemistry Co-op program, and it is this work that is still speculated on today by research chemists worldwide. Eventually, much to the disappointment of his professors, Ron graduated, and decided to complete his professional year for his teaching certificate. It was here that Mr. Neufeld

found his ability to manufacture facts virtually on the spot was a valuable asset. Investigation by the Department for National Defense have revealed that Mr. Neufeld's hobbies involve, but are not limited to, computers, virtual test flying, sports involving the dried intestinal tracts of felines, speculative fiction, and writing biographies in the third person. He is currently owned by two cats.
FULL CIRCLE 1976

1999

As mentioned above, part of the old Rogers House for boys is being used this year to accommodate girls. There are 25 residents, cared for by Houseparents Allan and Sandra Wood. The history here is rather fascinating, in that Allan was one of the original students to move in to the then new Rogers House in 1974. Allan graduated in 1976 and, twenty-three years later, becomes the Housemaster in the last year of operation of the building.

FURNITURE REMOVAL

The school suffers occasionally from strange happenings which coincide with the full moon, dogs and cats acting strangely, or  the appearance of rheumatic pains in the Headmaster's knees.

The latest in these phenomena manifested itself through the relocation of the MacKenzie House common room furniture to the plaza.

Taking advantage of the new open air lounge are Harold Backer and Sue Walker, cooling off after a pre-dawn run by watching Sesame Street re-runs.
