1999 LEADERSHIP RETREAT

Each September, the Grade 12s realize that they are now the student leaders of our school. Last year’s Grads have graduated. Last year’s Grade 11s have become this year’s Graduating Class. This reality strikes the new senior class with equal degrees of surprise and trepidation! Are they ready to lead?

Most of the Grade 12s serve as student leaders in their residences and learn about leadership in each House. They serve as House Monitors in their final term in Grade 11, and receive ongoing training from their Houseparents in Grade 12. House Prefects assist the faculty with the day to day management of house routines and become counselors and confidantes when students have problems. House Prefects may also be assigned specific responsibilities, for distributing pocket money or collating maintenance requests, for example. Above all, they act as role models and "big brothers or sisters" for the younger students.

In addition to their primary responsibilities in the residences, a number of School Prefects also assist the faculty and administration with the day to day management of campus wide routines and special events. Having lived together, House Prefects in each residence tend to know one another well by the time they reach Grade 12. School Prefects, however, drawn from each of the Houses, may not have developed such strong relationships with one another, especially if they have been in different academic classes, sports and fine arts in the past. Yet, the School Prefects are also
expected to function as a team and to act consistently. To help build these relationships and to train them for their campus roles, each September, the School Prefects go on a weekend Leadership Retreat, sponsored by Assistant Headmaster, Andrea Pennells.

This year’s Retreat was held at the Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Centre on Hornby Island. As always, the activities were designed to build mutual respect and trust within the group, explore key issues and principles of leadership, and develop a team ethos.

Two acronyms serve as touchstones: TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) and PREFECT (Positive Role model who leads by Example and is seen to be Fair, Effective, Considerate of others and Trustworthy). These are demanding criteria for adults and teenagers alike, and the students leave the Retreat with a greater awareness of the personal challenges and responsibilities of being leaders. At the same time, despite the wasps of the wood and the infamous Hornby prickly pear, everyone had lots of fun!

Our thanks to the staff of the Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Centre for their part in making this Leadership Retreat a memorable lifelong learning experience.

ECONOMICS 12 FIELD TRIP

The Economics 12 class headed to Vancouver last Friday to take part in a one-day conference on economic issues. The conference was hosted and run by The Fraser Institute. In all, 18 Brentwood students took part in the event, attended by more than 300 students from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. They were treated to some excellent presentations that dealt with many of the economic and personal issues facing us all. The conference covered topics including: basic economic principles, getting jobs in the 21st century, the environment, and (the most enlightening) a presentation by Mr. Jason Clemens of the Fraser Institute dealing with the problems and potential solutions to the economic woes of B.C.

The students were challenged by the length of the day (on the bus by 4:45am and not returning until 10:00pm the same night) as well as the conference material. The manner in which they responded and their level of involvement in the conference is to be commended.

CHARITY SUPPORT

In the 1999-99 school year the student body, disturbed by pictures from the Kosovo crisis, gave their active support to the World Vision 30-Hour Famine.
No fewer than 100 students took part raising, in total, over $7,000 for famine relief. The prime motivator in this exercise was Joelle Plomb (grad of 1999). Seen at the right is sister Chantal Plomb (grade 11) with the certificate of appreciation received this week.

Chantal has obviously carried on in the same family traditions, as she was one of the leaders of the group travelling to Victoria on Sunday morning to support "Run For the Cure" -- a charity run to raise funds for research into breast cancer.

RUGBY

With the Canadian National A Team currently playing in the World Cup, the National B Team are spending a week in Fiji playing a series of matches against the host country and other local teams. Honoured to be chosen as the coach of the team is Tony Medina, the Brentwood Director of Sports.

SPORTS
FIELD HOCKEY

The Senior Girls played in the invitational Bridgman Cup at the University of Victoria. As there were a number of very strong sides represented in the total of 16 teams, the Brentwood players were moderately pleased with their 8th place finish.
Final record: Won 1, Tied 2, Lost 3.

VOLLEYBALL

The Senior Girls competed in the ISA tournament in Victoria. The team finished 1st in their group but lost a close match to SMUS in the semi-final. By winning the consolation final they emerged with the Bronze medal -- a commendable result for their first tournament.

RUGBY

For their first fixtures of the season, the Brentwood club hosted a number of teams from St Georges on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors had a successful day and the home teams began planning for the return fixture.
