BC PROVINCIAL AAA FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the school playing fields were the venue for the 1999 AAA Field Hockey Championship. The top 16 teams in the province competed, playing a total of 48 matches. On Thursday the weather cooperated beautifully, with cool, but clear air and the occasional sunny periods. Rain on Friday did little to dampen the intense spirit of the games, and a bright start to Saturday enabled the finals to be completed before the rains came.

All the results and standings can be seen at the AAA Hockey page.

VANCOUVER ISLAND SENIOR GIRLS AAA VOLLEYBALL FINALS

The second major event of the weekend saw 8 teams competing for the right to advance to the senior girls provincial volleyball championships. A packed gym, with two matches in progress simultaneously on adjacent courts, created a raucous atmosphere which embodied the spirit of keen competition.

Brentwood finished the round-robin in second place, defeated Kwalikum in the semi-final, then lost a close match to Max Cameron in the final. Jacquie Connor and Terrah Jong were named to the tournament all-star team.

Brentwood, Max Cameron, and Kwalikum, who won the 3/4th place match all advance to the provincial championships in Port Coquitlam/Maple Ridge on 3rd-5th December.

SPEAKER SERIES - 1

The school frequently invites speakers from many walks of life to address the school, whether to specialist groups or to the entire student body. Last Tuesday, students from all grades listened to a lecture by Mr. Clayton Johnston about his experiences in Kosovo in June of this year. The trip was covered in the Week 27 and Week 30 editions of the 1998-99 Web page. The speech, an account of a harrowing experience by the reader, was inspirational in content and heartfelt in delivery,  and was appreciated by all who heard it. The text of the speech has already been published internationally.

The address can be read at Kosovo 1999

SPEAKER SERIES - 2

Addressing the school on Monday was the well-known Canadian author and journalist Gwynne Dyer. Mr. Dyer conducted a seminar and discussion with the grade 8 and grad 9 classes (in separate sessions) on the topic: The New Canada and the Globalization Shuffle

Following, the grade 10, 11, and 12 classes attende a lecture entitled: Democratic Overdog -- How should the democratic powers behave?

Right: Rob MacLean and Gwynne Dyer between sessions.

"A Season At A Glance"

Our season began with an exciting second place finish at the Frances Kelsey "Welcome Back" Tournament, September 17th-18th. Regular season play began on September 21st. The weekend of October 15-16th, the Junior A volleyball team geared up, loaded up, and travelled to the ISA tournament at St. Michael's University School. The gym, lit with bright neon lights was filled with a total of ten teams.

The tournament was divided into two pools of five teams. With past injuries: black eyes (Georgia Murray), concussions (Melanie Jones), and dislocated shoulders (Vanessa Morcom) our team was appropriately prepared for battle. The long, two-day fight placed our Brentwood team with a third place in our pool. Defeated in the remaining 10 minutes of our playoff round, Brentwood landed a final fourth place position in the tournament.

Following the ISA tournament was a planned 3 week schedule of games and practices. The team was preparing for the crucial C.V.I.A. Tournament at Frances Kelsey School. Although a month away, thought and sweat went into each practice.

The day of the tournament finally arrived. These games would determine who would represent the Mid-Island region in the final Island Tournament of the season. Our goal was to qualify for the semi-finals, a standard that proved elusive. We ended in fourth place in our pool. Disappointed and tired, we knew that nothing could change the past games or scores. As Co-Captain of the Junior A Volleyball Team, I would like to commend our players as brave soldiers who fought and learned to cope with their losses. Finally to Mrs. Flynn and Ms. Voracek, thank you for the lending of your ears, hearts, and support.

Vanessa Morcom (Co-Captain)

(PS. Mrs. Flynn: The team owes you a frozen Score Bar!)
